Ellie Goulding ‘Your Song’ Single

Ellie Goulding’s stripped back cover of Elton John’s sublime ‘Your Song’ is her highest charting single to date – her producers should take note. The former folk-stress reemerged last year, new and improved with a slick, electro-pop sheen, and her debut album ‘Lights’ consequently stuck to a relevant but rather bland formula. It seemed the music biz had tampered with her promising pop-folk in the hope of snapping up the ‘next La Roux’ trophy, only to lose out to Marina (and her Diamonds).

Part of Goulding‘s rerelease of her debut – ‘Bright Lights’‘Your Song’ is an understated yet captivating showcase of this elfin pop-princess at her organic best. Of course, this is Elton’s song and few can doubt his songwriting capabilities, but it’s Ellie’s sweet and vulnerable voice that’s the draw here. Backed by just some gentle piano and cello, her childlike warble is raw and engaging – much more effective than her polished vocal performance on ‘Lights’. Dear producers, we don’t like auto-tune.
