Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip ‘The Logic Of Chance’

Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip return through Rob da Bank’s Sunday Best label with ‘The Logic Of Chance’ – an eclectic collection of upbeat hip hop tunes, which see a development of both Sac’selectronic music production and Pip’s spoken words.

‘Angles’Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip’s debut album – was one of the more enjoyable records released in 2008. Hit singles ‘Thou Shalt Not Kill’, ‘The Beat That My Heart Skipped’, and ‘A Letter from God To Man’ became among the most entertaining songs of that year. As an album, however, ‘Angles’lacked consistency. To be fair, DJ/producer Sac and spoken words artist Pip had only decided to fuse their separate talents two years prior, and this may explain why, at times, the record sounded more like a disjointed mash-up of two separate artists. Two years of solid touring has improved the duo’s chemistry, and consequently ‘The Logic Of Chance’ plays out as a more collaborative affair.

Whereas there was more of an ‘indie’ element present on album numero one, Dan Le Sac’s production on this LP is noticeably more dance-orientated. Opener ‘Sick Tonight’ is a liquid drum’n’bass influenced banger, while ‘The Beat’s’ electro rock and dubstep amalgamation sounds like a Rusko remix of The Prodigy.  There are some lovely, electro pop moments, including ‘Cauliflower’ (featuring Lilly Allen-esque female vocals) and catchy current single ‘Get Better’. Pip’s lyrical themes remain just as engaging as the duo’s earlier material, covering both the political (democracy, knife crime stats) and the socio-observational (poor behaviour on late night travel).

The album as a whole is highly addictive and it’s hard to pick out an individual highlight, but if our arms were tied behind our back Rivmixx would choose closing track ‘Cowboi’. Despite the dark lyrical content (true story of attempted rape), the song is an uplifting ballad with a very memorable, oddly sung chorus.

Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip’s relationship has progressed solidly since meeting in 2006, and as a result their sophomore album ‘The Logic Of Chance’ is an improvement on their fine but flawed debut.Pip’s vocals and lyrics are perhaps what make the duo stand out, but it’s the sheer diversity of Sac’sbeats that make the album so fresh and exciting; everything from electro, d’n’b, house and nu-rave to hip hop gets a polished, pop makeover.
