Killaflaw Mini Interview

Killaflaw are a two-piece rock-dance crossover act from the UK who Eddy Temple-Morris has described as “the missing link between Soundgarden and The Prodigy”. Formed in 2006, the band’s name was inspired by the Howlin’ Wolf track ‘Killing Floor’, notably covered by Hendrix and Zepplin. Their mix of breakbeat and electro with acoustic guitars and trumpets make Killaflaw a very special live act. And, after completing their first UK tour this year, you can expect to hear a heck of a lot more about this duo in 2010.

Who are you and where are you from?
Killaflaw is a Liverpool-based dance rock act comprising of Andy Paton and Benn Helm.”

What have you done?
“The band won  XFM’s Demo of The Year award in 2008 for their track ‘Revolution’. In 2009 they successfully completed their first UK tour, played with the likes of Alabama 3, Chase & Status and Orbital’s Phil Hartnoll. The singles ‘Holy Funk’ and ‘Set Me On Fire’ were also released in 2009 and enjoyed a wide spell of airplay on stations such as Radio 1, XFM, NME Radio, Galaxy and Kerrang!, as well as across many regional stations.

“Both singles contained exclusive remixes; ‘Holy Funk’ contained a remix of ‘Happy Days’ by Reverend and The Makers’ Ed Cosens, while Utah Saints produced a remix of ‘Set Me On Fire’, which is being lauded by both radio and club DJs alike.”

What inspires you?
“The band draws musical inspiration from a wide variety of genres and artists, ranging from Mississippi Delta Blues and work song, through Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix and onto the likes of The Chemical Brothers and Justice.”

What makes you stand out?
“The stand out qualities of Killaflaw are fat breaks and dirty basslines, fronted by a massive rock vocal. Using a trumpet on certain tracks also adds something a bit more authentic. There is a genuine belief that Killaflaw sounds like no other band around at this time.”

Where are you going?
“The band would like to get to the top of their game and continue to enthral new and existing fans with their live shows. Spring 2010 sees the band release its debut album ‘Sleaze and Grit’. The title track will contain guest vocals by US rapper Shunda K. In addition to that there will be extensive touring, including a second UK tour and a three week tour of Canada. There will be several festival performances in the UK and possibly mainland Europe.”
